Choosing your first pair of running shoes
Start with fit, comfort and the surfaces you actually run on.

Try shoes on your feet
Wear the socks you plan to run in and, if possible, try shoes later in the day. Walk or jog a little. Leave room for the toes, look for a secure heel and avoid pressure points. If your feet differ in size, fit the larger one.
Do not buy solely because a label promises to prevent injury. Comfort during a short test matters more than marketing categories.
Match your terrain and budget
Roads and treadmills have different demands from muddy trails. A durable, comfortable pair within budget is enough to begin; race shoes are optional.
Persistent foot pain or a history of injury deserves individual assessment rather than using a shoe type as treatment.
