What is 80/20 running and why it works
Keep most running comfortable and use harder work sparingly.

The idea behind 80/20
The 80/20 approach allocates most running time to easy effort and a smaller share to harder efforts. It is a planning guide, not a minute-by-minute rule. During easy running you can speak in sentences; hard running makes conversation difficult.
Making every run hard can make training difficult to sustain. Easy sessions help you accumulate movement while leaving room to recover.
For a new runner
Build a habit of two or three easy sessions a week first; run–walk counts. Add short faster segments only after you tolerate the routine and can recover. There is no need to force a full 20% of high-intensity work.
Use breathing and perceived effort alongside your watch. Heat, sleep and measurement error can affect heart-rate zones.
