Goal
Big-3 strength
Twelve weeks adding load to the squat, bench press and deadlift on a 5x5-style linear progression: a small jump every session, a 10% back-off when you stall, then climb again. Re-test 5RM at the end so the numbers are real.
Who it's for
Lifters with 3-6 months of training whose technique in the big three is workable and who want the numbers to move.
Example program length: 12 weeks
The path
These phases show how this goal can develop over time.
Phase 1
Linear accumulation
Five sets of five with a small jump every session. Volume accrues fast, so technique must look the same on set five as on set one.
Phase 2
Stall and reset
When five reps fail three sessions running, back off 10% and climb again with smaller jumps. This is a normal part of the cycle, not a failure.
Phase 3
Realization
A deload week, then re-test 5RM on all three lifts, one lift per session. The phase needs at least two weeks, which is why it holds a fifth of any plan length; on longer plans the extra time spreads the three test sessions out rather than adding heavy work.
Example activities in the first phase
A starting plan could include:
- Day A: squat 5x5, bench 5x5, barbell row 5x5
- Day B: squat 5x5, overhead press 5x5, deadlift 1x5
- Core and posterior-chain accessories after each session
