Gym anxiety for beginners: where to start
Make the first visit a short tour and a few manageable movements.

Lower the pressure
You do not need to know every machine or lift heavy on day one. Walk around, try 5–10 minutes on a treadmill and pick two easy-to-adjust machines, such as a leg press and seated row. Read instructions, adjust the seat and try light, controlled reps.
Ask staff how to set up equipment or share space. A quieter hour may help, but it is not a requirement to start.
Build a first session
A 20–30 minute visit can include a warm-up, one leg movement, one push, one pull and an easy finish. Record machine settings and loads for next time. Add time and exercises as the space becomes familiar.
Most people are focused on their own sessions. Going with a friend or booking a few coached sessions can help if anxiety makes starting hard.
