Suspension Trainer Push-Up
intermediate · push_horizontal
Setup
Hang the straps or a suspension trainer from a rack or a fixed point that takes your whole body weight, and set both straps to equal length somewhere between chest and hip height. Before you lean in, yank hard on the handles and look along the webbing for fraying. Grip the handles firmly with palms facing each other, and walk your feet away from the anchor to your chosen lean angle, keeping your body in one straight line from shoulders to heels.
Execution
- Brace your core and glutes, keep your body in one straight line from shoulders to heels, with your arms extended at the top.
- Inhale and lower your chest between the handles by bending the elbows, with the elbows at about 45 degrees from your torso.
- Stop when your chest is level with the handles or a little lower while your shoulders are still in control, keeping the handles parallel instead of letting them drift wide apart.
- Exhale and press the handles away from your chest to bring your body back to the start, hips and chest rising together.
- Keep the shoulder-hip-heel line for the whole set; hips sagging or piking both mean the core isn't braced enough.
- If you run out of strength mid-set, walk your feet toward the anchor so the lean gets smaller until you're standing upright, get your balance, and only then let go of the handles; never release while your body is still leaning.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower, exhale as you push up. Keep your breathing natural, and don't hold it.
Quick cues
- Straight line, shoulders to heels.
- Elbows at 45 degrees.
- Handles parallel, don't flare.
- Straps wobbling means lean in less.
- Wrists in line with your forearms.
Common faults
Fault: Hips sagging mid-set
Fix: Brace the core and glutes, and step closer to the anchor if it still sags.
Fault: Handles drifting wide apart on the way down
Fix: Keep the handles parallel and close to your body, as if squeezing them through a narrow tube.
Fault: Setting too steep a lean before getting used to the strap's instability
Fix: Start with a shallow lean and only increase it once you can control the strap's wobble.
Fault: Letting go of the handles while still leaning back to rest mid-set
Fix: Always walk toward the anchor until you're standing upright before releasing the handles.
