Setup
Wear trainers that still have cushioning, step onto the stationary stairs before starting the machine, and take a light hold of the side rails while you find the pace.
Execution
- Warm up at the slowest setting for 2-3 minutes to get used to the stairs moving continuously underfoot.
- Step with the whole foot onto each stair, eyes on the step just ahead rather than far away.
- Stand tall, brace the belly lightly, and rest the hands on the rails only for balance.
- Keep an even step rhythm and avoid rushing, which is what causes a missed stair.
- Aim for 15-20 minutes of continuous stepping in the main block, not counting the 2-3 minutes of settling in at the start and the 2-3 minutes of slowing down at the end.
- Bring the speed down gradually over the last 2-3 minutes before stepping fully off the machine.
- A missed step, dizziness or chest pain means gripping the rails firmly, dropping to the slowest speed and then stopping the machine.
Breathing
Breathe in rhythm with your steps, taking the air down into the belly. If you cannot hold a steady breathing rhythm, slow the machine down right away.
Quick cues
- Step with the whole foot on the stair.
- Eyes on the next step, not far ahead.
- Stand tall, hands just for balance.
- Even rhythm, never rushed.
- Miss a step, grip the rails at once.
Common faults
Fault: Watching the feet instead of the stair coming up
Fix: Aim the eyes at the next step about one pace ahead, and slow down if focus keeps slipping.
Fault: Leaning the whole body on the rails to avoid stepping fully
Fix: Drop the speed to a level where you can step fully without needing to lean.
Fault: Ramping the speed up too fast while still learning the machine
Fix: Stay at the slowest setting for the first few sessions until the footing feels solid.
Fault: Placing only half the foot on the edge of the stair
Fix: Step deep onto the middle of the stair, slowing down if the foot cannot land fully in time.
