Bodyweight Standing Twist

beginner · rotation

Setup

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart in a clear patch of floor, knees soft, both hands raised to chest height in a light guard.

Execution

  1. Rotate your upper body and hips to one side, letting the opposite heel pivot so the knee stays in line with the toes, arms turning with the torso.
  2. Rotate straight back to the other side right after, keeping a continuous rhythm like shadow-fighting.
  3. Keep both feet in contact with the floor the whole time: no jumping, and no lifting a foot or a knee.
  4. Hold a pace where you can still say a short sentence between rotations.
  5. After 30-45 seconds continuous, stop, stand tall and slow your breathing before the next round.
  6. Stop the drill for the rest of the session if you feel dizzy, get a sharp low-back pain or numbness spreading down a leg; if resting does not settle it, get it checked.

Breathing

Breathe steadily with the rotation rhythm, never holding your breath. If you run out of air or feel dizzy, stop and stand tall to rest.

Quick cues

  • Rotate from the hips, not just the shoulders.
  • Heel pivots, knee follows the toes.
  • Keep the belly lightly braced.
  • Shoulders stay relaxed, not shrugged.
  • Steady rhythm beats fast rhythm.

Common faults

  • Fault: Both feet leaving the floor on the rotation

Fix: Slow down and focus on rotating the hips while the heel only pivots lightly on the floor.

  • Fault: Only twisting the shoulders and arms while the hips stay still

Fix: Actively rotate the hips first and let the shoulders and arms follow.

  • Fault: Rotating so fast that posture falls apart

Fix: Slow down to a pace where the torso stays upright and the knee bend stays even.

  • Fault: The knees locking straight for the whole drill

Fix: Remind yourself to keep a soft knee bend before each new round.
