Standing Hamstring and Calf Stretch

Setup

Stand tall and loop a resistance band or strap around the sole of one foot, holding both ends with your hands. Place that foot forward with the heel on the floor.

Execution

  1. Bend the back, standing knee slightly for balance while keeping the front, stretching leg nearly straight.
  2. Lift the toes of the front foot off the floor so only the heel touches, then hinge forward slowly from the hip.
  3. Use the band to pull the toes gently toward you to add tension in the calf, keeping the back long instead of rounding it.
  4. Stop once you feel a clear stretch behind the thigh and calf, and hold for 20-30 seconds while breathing steadily.
  5. Release the band, set the foot down and switch legs, holding the same time on the other side.
  6. Numbness or tingling running into the foot means loosening the band right away and reducing the forward hinge.

Breathing

Breathe slowly and never hold it. Let each exhale fold the body a little further, rather than pulling the band harder.

Quick cues

  • Hinge from the hip, back stays long.
  • Heel down, toes lift up.
  • Gentle pull, never a yank.
  • Stretching knee stays nearly straight.
  • Numbness in the foot, loosen it.

Common faults

  • Fault: Rounding the spine to fold lower

Fix: Fold less but keep the back long from hip to head; the stretch should come from the hip joint.

  • Fault: Yanking the band hard until there is a sharp pain

Fix: Ease the pull to a moderate stretch and hold longer instead of pulling harder.

  • Fault: Locking the back standing knee straight and losing balance

Fix: Soften the standing knee slightly and stand near a wall or chair for support if needed.

  • Fault: Holding for only 5-10 seconds before switching sides

Fix: Set a 20-30 second timer for each side, because the hamstring needs that long before it starts to release.
