Treadmill Running

Setup

Wear running shoes that still have cushioning and stand on the side rails before turning the machine on. Clip the safety magnet to your clothing with the other end on the console, so the belt stops if you fall or drift too far back.

Execution

  1. Start with 3-5 minutes of brisk walking at a low speed to warm the joints before speeding up.
  2. Raise the belt speed a small step at a time up to a steady running pace: moderately hard, where a short sentence still comes out but a long one does not.
  3. Run tall, eyes toward the console rather than down at your feet, arms swinging front to back.
  4. Keep the steps short and quick, around 170-180 steps per minute as a reference, landing under your hips.
  5. Only touch the handrails lightly for balance when you need to, never leaning on them or gripping to take weight off your legs.
  6. To stop in a hurry, hold the rails, put both feet on the fixed side rails, then hit the stop button or pull the safety clip; never jump off and never step backwards while the belt is still moving.
  7. Aim for 20-30 minutes of continuous running in the main block at an effort where a short sentence still comes out, not counting the 3-5 minute walking warm-up and the 3-5 minutes of slowing down.
  8. Bring the speed down gradually over the last 3-5 minutes to walk it out before stopping.
  9. If you run out of breath, the incline feels too steep or your heart rate drifts up, slow down or lower the incline at once. Chest pain, dizziness or unusual shortness of breath means ending the session for good and seeing a doctor.

Breathing

Breathe in rhythm with your steps, in for two steps and out for two steps as an easy pattern. If the rhythm breaks into gasping or a short sentence will not come out, slow the belt down instead of forcing the breathing.

Quick cues

  • Short sentences, or slow the belt.
  • Touch the rails, never lean on them.
  • Short steps, land under your hips.
  • Eyes on the console, not your feet.
  • Raise the speed one notch at a time.
  • Clip the safety magnet on before the belt moves.

Common faults

  • Fault: Gripping or leaning the whole body onto the handrails while running

Fix: Drop the speed to a level where you do not need the rails, then build it back up slowly.

  • Fault: Ramping the speed or incline up too fast right from the start

Fix: Raise it in small steps every 1-2 minutes and hold steady if you feel out of breath.

  • Fault: Dropping the head to look down at the feet or the belt

Fix: Look ahead at the console or straight forward, keeping the neck in line with the back.

  • Fault: Overstriding, with the heel landing well ahead of the hips

Fix: Lift the cadence toward 170-180 steps per minute and shorten the stride.
