Linear Acceleration Wall Drill
intermediate · locomotion

Setup
Wear athletic shoes that fit and grip, on a dry floor; outdoors, take the early morning or late afternoon so the heat stays off you. Stand about one arm's length from a wall and put your palms on it at shoulder height with the arms straight. Lean forward until head, hips and heels make one straight line at about 45 degrees, with the body never touching the wall and the glutes and belly braced.
Execution
- Quickly lift your right knee up high, pausing briefly at the top.
- Drive that foot straight down into the floor right under your hip, as if attacking the ground.
- As soon as the right foot lands, switch to quickly lifting the left knee.
- Keep your hands firm on the wall and the body in one straight line throughout, without piking at the hips or standing upright.
- Gradually increase the tempo after a few slow reps to get used to the technique.
- End the set when the hips start to sag or the foot lands ahead of the hip; push gently off the wall to stand up and rest. Chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness means ending the session and getting checked.
Breathing
Breathe fast and steady with the driving legs, without holding your breath.
Quick cues
- Drive straight down under the hip.
- Knee lifts high, pauses briefly.
- Body holds one fixed angle.
- Build the tempo gradually, don't rush.
Common faults
Fault: Standing upright during the drill
Fix: Keep your hands on the wall and hold the same body angle throughout, bracing the core so you do not stand up.
Fault: Driving the foot forward instead of straight down under the hip
Fix: Aim the foot-strike point directly under the hip, not out in front.
Fault: Not lifting the knee high enough before driving down
Fix: Take the thigh up to hip height before the foot drives down, and drill 5 slow reps per side before you speed up.
