Isometric Chest Squeezes
beginner · isolation

Setup
Stand or sit tall, bend your elbows to about 90 degrees and press your palms together right in front of your chest, fingers pointing up. No equipment is needed, so this works anywhere, even during a break at the office.
Execution
- Press your palms together gradually, building the force up rather than clamping down all at once.
- Focus on feeling the chest squeeze in the middle, keeping the shoulders relaxed and down.
- Hold the press steady for the planned duration, breathing normally the whole time.
- Release the tension gradually, not letting go all at once.
- Rest your arms for a few seconds before the next hold.
- That planned time is 10-15 seconds a hold, 3-4 holds in a set, with 30 seconds of rest before the next set.
Breathing
Breathe steadily and naturally while holding the press, and do not hold your breath no matter how hard you squeeze.
Quick cues
- Build the force slow, don't slam it.
- Shoulders loose, not up by the ears.
- Keep breathing through the hold.
- Feel the chest squeeze, not the wrists.
Common faults
Fault: Holding the breath while squeezing hard
Fix: Count the exhale out loud during the hold, or ease off the squeeze until you can still talk normally.
Fault: The shoulders shrugging up toward the ears while pressing
Fix: Actively pull the shoulders down before pressing and recheck their position partway through the hold.
Fault: The elbows dropping below chest height
Fix: Raise the elbows level with the wrists and shoulders, keeping the whole arm block at chest height throughout.
Fault: The effort landing in the wrists and fingers instead of the chest
Fix: Think about squeezing the elbows toward each other, not just the palms, so the effort lands in the middle of the chest.
