Standing Front Leg Swing
beginner · mobility

Setup
Stand beside a chair or sturdy support, holding it lightly with one hand, with your weight on the standing leg.
Execution
- Stand tall with your weight fully on one leg, the other leg resting lightly on the floor.
- Swing the free leg forward and up with the knee straight, only as high as the hip allows without leaning back.
- Let it swing back down and continue backward to a comfortable range, without forcing it.
- Keep the swing controlled and rhythmic rather than kicking hard at the top.
- Do 8-10 swings, then switch sides and hold the support with the other hand.
- Keep the standing knee soft, not locked, for the whole set.
Breathing
Breathe in rhythm with the swing, exhaling as the leg moves forward. There is no need to hold your breath for this drill.
Quick cues
- Straight leg, no bent knee.
- Swing to range, don't force it.
- Standing knee stays soft.
- Swing like a pendulum.
- Match the reps on both sides.
Common faults
Fault: Leaning the torso back to kick the leg higher
Fix: Keep the ribs stacked over the hips and stop the swing at the height that allows that.
Fault: Locking out the standing knee for the whole set
Fix: Keep a soft bend in the standing knee throughout the set.
Fault: Swinging one side more than the other
Fix: Count the swings out loud and match them exactly on each leg.
Fault: Yanking the leg hard at the top of the arc
Fix: Slow the tempo and let the leg decelerate smoothly instead of snapping it.
