Floor Calf Raise
beginner · isolation
Setup
Stand tall on flat ground with your feet hip-width apart, toes pointing straight ahead. If a wall or countertop happens to be within reach, stand close enough to touch it lightly with one hand for balance — that's optional, only if you feel wobbly.
Execution
- Spread your weight evenly across the balls of both feet, knees naturally straight.
- Exhale and drive both heels up as high as they go, rising onto your toes.
- Hold one beat at the top, feeling the calves squeeze hard.
- Inhale and lower the heels under control over 2 seconds until they touch the floor.
- Keep the knees straight and the torso from tipping forward for the whole set.
- If you feel unsteady, touch a wall lightly rather than shortening the range of the raise.
Breathing
Exhale as you rise onto your toes, inhale as you lower down. This is a light, high-rep exercise, so keep your breathing steady — there's no reason to hold your breath.
Quick cues
- Rise all the way up every rep.
- Let the heels touch down, don't stop halfway.
- Weight even across both feet.
- Knees straight, don't bend them to help.
- Picture a string pulling your head up.
Common faults
Fault: Not letting the heels touch all the way down between reps
Fix: Tap the heels lightly to the floor each time before driving back up.
Fault: Bending the knees to help push the body up
Fix: Keep the knees naturally locked and drive the movement from the calves alone.
Fault: Rolling the weight onto the outside edges of the feet on the way up
Fix: Look down to check both big toes carry even weight and rise straight up.
Fault: Bouncing quickly through the reps without pausing at the top
Fix: Count one beat at the top before lowering.
