Calves SMR
beginner · mobility

Setup
Sit on the floor with a foam roller under one calf, crossing the other leg over it or resting it on the floor to take some weight off. Prop both hands behind you to lift your hips.
Execution
- Lift your hips off the floor so your weight presses down through the roller into the calf.
- Roll slowly from just below the knee down to where the calf muscle turns into the Achilles tendon, not onto the tendon itself, pausing at the tightest or most tender spot.
- Hold at that spot for 20-30 seconds, breathing evenly, feeling the tightness ease.
- Rotate the calf gently side to side on the roller to find other tight spots.
- Switch legs and repeat the same process.
Breathing
Breathe slow and deep while holding a tight spot; exhaling helps the muscle release further.
Quick cues
- Roll slowly, pause at the tight spot.
- Hips lifted off the floor.
- Hold 20-30 seconds at each spot.
- Exhale to help the muscle release.
Common faults
Fault: Rolling quickly over the whole calf without pausing anywhere
Fix: Slow down and stop for a full 20-30 seconds at each tight spot you find.
Fault: Pressing too hard on one spot, causing sharp pain
Fix: Take some weight off by letting the other leg support part of your body on the floor.
Fault: Rolling directly over the back of the knee joint
Fix: Stop the roller just below the knee crease and never roll over the joint itself.
