Cable Chest Press

Setup

Set a bench with the back pad nearly upright (about 80–90 degrees) between two cable towers and set the pulleys at chest height; if your gym has a dual cable machine with its own seat, use that instead. Sit with your back against the pad and take a handle in each hand, elbows bent about 90 degrees, upper arms at roughly 45 degrees from your torso.

Execution

  1. Sit tall with your chest open, keeping that posture steady for the whole set.
  2. Exhale and press both handles forward until your arms are nearly locked out.
  3. Squeeze the chest at full reach, without locking the elbows out hard.
  4. Inhale and bring your hands back under control until you feel a light stretch in the chest.
  5. Keep your back from leaving the bench for the entire set.

Breathing

Exhale as you press out, inhale as you bring the handles back. Do not hold your breath at full reach; if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, a hernia or you are pregnant, use a lighter load and keep breathing steadily.

Quick cues

  • Chest open, back stays on the bench.
  • Squeeze the chest at full reach.
  • Elbows stay soft at the end.
  • Return slow, feel a light stretch.

Common faults

  • Fault: The back lifting off the bench to help push farther

Fix: Drop the weight and keep the back pinned to the bench through the press.

  • Fault: The elbows locking out hard and jerking at full reach

Fix: Stop just short of a hard lockout and keep the motion smooth.

  • Fault: Pressing mostly with the arms while the shoulders round forward

Fix: Open the chest and pull the shoulders down before starting the press.

  • Fault: Letting the hands return too fast, causing the cable to snap back

Fix: Count 2 seconds on the return so the chest controls the whole motion.
