Atlas Stone Trainer
advanced · hinge

Setup
Set the round training implement (a stone or a heavy sandbag) in front of your feet, standing slightly wider than shoulder width so your legs straddle it. Place the platform right in front of you.
Execution
- Squat down low and wrap both arms fully around the implement, pulling it snug against your stomach.
- Lift the implement onto your thighs by driving your hips and extending your knees, keeping your back flat the whole way up.
- Use your thighs as a shelf and roll the implement upward, keeping your back flat and chest open instead of leaning back for momentum.
- Exhale, drive your hips forward hard and stand fully upright, hugging the implement up to chest or shoulder height.
- Set the implement down on the platform in front of you, without throwing or slamming it down.
- Rest fully between reps since this is a very demanding full-body lift.
Breathing
Inhale as you hug the implement to your stomach, exhale hard as you stand up. Never hold your breath trying to force a heavier lift; if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, a hernia or you are pregnant, do not do this exercise.
Quick cues
- Hug it tight to the stomach first.
- Use the thighs as a shelf.
- Drive with the hips, not the back.
- Set it down soft, never throw it.
Common faults
Fault: Rounding the back to scoop the implement off the floor
Fix: Squat down deeper and keep the chest open before wrapping the arms around it.
Fault: Pulling the implement off the ground before it is snug against the stomach
Fix: Cinch the arms tight around it and press it into the stomach, feeling it locked on before lifting.
Fault: Standing up by throwing the whole torso backward suddenly
Fix: Drive the hips forward to build momentum instead of throwing the torso back, keeping the implement close to the body.
Fault: Throwing the implement onto the platform instead of setting it down under control
Fix: Bend the knees to follow the implement down and place it gently to protect the wrists and low back.
