Band-Assisted Pull-Up
beginner · pull_vertical

Setup
Loop a resistance band over the bar and thread it through itself. Put one knee or one foot in the loop; the thicker the band, the more help you get.
Execution
- Take an overhand grip slightly wider than your shoulders and hang with straight arms.
- Brace your belly and glutes so the band cannot set you swinging.
- Set the shoulder blades down, then exhale and drive the elbows down until your chin clears the bar.
- Inhale and lower over 3 seconds, resisting the band instead of letting it fire you back up.
- When you can do 8 clean reps, move to a thinner band.
- Get out by standing on a box before you take your foot out, so the band cannot snap back at you.
Breathing
Exhale on the way up, inhale on the way down. The band is what lets you keep the rhythm steady on the last reps.
Quick cues
- The band helps low, you work high.
- Blades down first, then pull.
- Resist the band on the way down.
- Eight clean reps, thinner band.
- Stand on a box before stepping out.
Common faults
Fault: Letting the band launch you with almost no pulling
Fix: Move to a thinner band and count three seconds down so it cannot load up and fling you.
Fault: Trying to get a foot into the band while already hanging
Fix: Put a low box under the bar, stand on it to set your foot, and only then hang.
Fault: Using a band so thick that nothing ever progresses
Fix: Pick the band that leaves you at 6-8 reps, and log the band color every session.
Fault: Swinging the bent knee to help throw yourself up
Fix: Straighten the free leg down and squeeze the glutes so the body stays one piece.
