Signing up for your first race: how far ahead to prepare

Choose a distance and preparation window based on your current routine.

Pick a manageable distance

If you are not yet running regularly, a 5K may be a more approachable first event than a 10K. If you already walk or run consistently, use several weeks to build a long session toward your chosen distance. There is no universal number of weeks; your starting point matters.

Check the course, start time, cutoff, likely weather and travel details. Aim for a comfortable finish before targeting a fast time.

Rehearse before race day

Try your shoes, socks, pre-run food and intended pace in training. Build distance gradually, keep easy days and reduce training near the event. Do not rush to make up missed sessions.

Start slower than excitement suggests. Stop and seek event support for significant pain, dizziness or unusual symptoms.
